How to taste wine: a simple four-step system
No snobbery. Sight, smell, taste, verdict — a system you can apply to any bottle in five minutes.
Four steps
- Sight. Look at the color.
- Smell. Sniff first without swirling. Then swirl, let it breathe, sniff again.
- Taste. Note acidity, tannins, sweetness, body.
- Verdict. Do you want another sip?
Common mistakes
- Holding the glass by the bowl.
- Tasting in a room with strong odors.
- Not writing anything down.
