How to taste wine: a simple four-step system

No snobbery. Sight, smell, taste, verdict — a system you can apply to any bottle in five minutes.

Four steps

  1. Sight. Look at the color.
  2. Smell. Sniff first without swirling. Then swirl, let it breathe, sniff again.
  3. Taste. Note acidity, tannins, sweetness, body.
  4. Verdict. Do you want another sip?

Common mistakes

  • Holding the glass by the bowl.
  • Tasting in a room with strong odors.
  • Not writing anything down.
